Extracurricular

Overview

West Michigan Lutheran High School’s extracurricular activities and organizations are designed to give students the opportunity to learn new skills, engage in activities that interest them, and learn to work together.

The activities and organizations offered change as students’ interests change, but one thing remains the same: WMLHS is committed to providing every student the ability to participate. As a rule we do not have cuts or other non-academic hurdles to participation.

Our extracurricular activities and clubs include both internal and external programs for: Athletics, Drama, Music, Parent Boosters, Student Council, Faith in Full Action (FIFA) Prayer Group, National Honors Society, Science Day and Community Service Days

Mustang Boosters

The Mustang Boosters are a parent led group that raises money to fund the extracurricular activities at West Michigan Lutheran School.

Your gifts are an integral part of the needed support to fund our mission of “nurturing and preparing students for Christ-centered lives.”

If you have questions about the Mustang Boosters, or want to get involved, please contact the school office at 616.455.2200.

Athletics

At WMLHS, the athletic program serves as a means to support and carry-out the mission of the school. As an extension of the classroom, athletics allow students to compete, to achieve goals, and to become well-rounded young men and women of strong moral character, consistent with the school’s Christian tradition.

We are a member of the
Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA)

If your child will be participating in athletics at West Michigan Lutheran, they must have a Sports Physical  on file with the school office prior to the beginning of the sport’s season.

Recent WMLHS Drama Club performances include: “The Rose of Treason,” “Snow White in the 70’s,” “Peter Pan,” “Mugsy Sent Me,” “Charlie Brown,” and “Cooking can be Murder.”

Music & Art

We are frequently asked about the importance of music and art in schools and why the academic classes and extracurricular programs are worth supporting. Statistically, studies have shown students who practice music and art have higher ACT scores, decreased at risk behavior, improved academic achievement, and higher math scores. That’s an excellent reason in our eyes.

Students in the music and art academic classes and extracurricular programs at WMLHS are exceptionally blessed to be taught by acclaimed local professionals. Both Mr. Obe VanderTol and his brother Mr. Johan VanderTol are accomplished, awarded, and recognized in the local arts community.

Obe teaches music and conducts our extracurricular music programs. Under his direction our students have had the honor to sing and perform at many area congregations, organizations, and events. Johan teaches art leads our extracurricular art programs. In addition to personally exhibiting at local high-end art galleries and competitions, Johan is uniquely situated to bless  our students by personally introducing them to the professional art community and events around West Michigan.
